 Bangladesh Institute of Peace and Security Studies (BIPSS) is a leading institution in Bangladesh for informed analysis on all aspects of broad spectrum of peace and security studies in the region and beyond. It is a non party, non profit organization and independent think tank which provides significant platform for the leading strategic thinkers, academics, former members of the civil, foreign and armed services and media persons to chalk out a comprehensive framework for peace and security issues. The Institute is headed by the President of BIPSS, Major Genral ANM Muniruzzaman, ndc, psc, (Retd). He directs and coordinates all research and administrative activities of the Institute. A team of highly qualified full time researchers with varied social science background conduct research activities

 

 

Building Social Harmony: Interfaith Youth Dialogue

 Bangladesh Institute of Peace and Security Studies (BIPSS) arranged a youth dialogue titled “Building Social Harmony: Interfaith Youth Dialogue” on 10th March, 2014. The aim of this dialogue was to find out the general position of each faith, in the present time, in relation to other faith based communities, state and society and inter-communal relations in Bangladesh. The state of religious minorities, the probable remedies of their worries and ways to enhance social harmony in Bangladesh were also discussed. A press release about the dialogue would be made and a summary of the dialogue would be published in BIPSS website and also be disseminated to concerned stake holders.

The day long dialogue was held at hotel Lake Castle, Gulshan, Dhaka. H.E Heather Cruden, the Canadian High Commissioner in Bangladesh had attended the dialogue as Chief Guest. President, BIPSS Major General Muniruzzaman (Retd), some BIPSS researchers and four theologians/clerics from four major religions were also present in the dialogue in addition to the youth participants from various faiths in Bangladesh.

 

President BIPSS attended an international Conference on 'Strategic Stability in the Indian Ocean

President BIPSS speaks at Police Staff College

President BIPSS, Major General Muniruzzaman (Retd). delivered a lecture on 'SAARC Region - Security and Threat Landscape' at an international training course on 'Transnational Crime - SAARC Perspective oragnised by the Bangladesh Police Staff College on 19 March 2014.

The training course was attended by senior and mid level officers of Police and other law enforcement agencies from the SAARC member states. General Muniruzzaman's presentation deliberated on the key traditional and non traditional security challenges confronting South Asia and a way forward.

 

 US Army Delegation Visits BIPSS

A three member delegation of the Chief of Staff of the United States Army’s Strategic Studies Group (CSA-SSG) led by Colonel Marc Harris paid a visit to BIPSS on 25th March’2014. Lieutenant Colonel David Lopes, Assistant Defense Attaché at the US Embassy in Dhaka accompanied the delegation. A brief overview of BIPSS was given to them.The President and other researchers of BIPSS discussed about the characteristics and challenges of Dhaka as a “Megacity”. The discussion highlighted the shortcomings of Dhaka including lack of access to safe drinking water, no system of solid waste management, shortage of utility services, crimes in the slum areas, human trafficking, limitations of rescue operations due to road congestion and no democratic governance system etc. It was also pointed out that the 16th largest megacity Dhaka is the most densely populated city in the world.

 

 European Union (EU) Delegation Visits BIPSS

A team from the Delegation of the European Union (EU) in Bangladesh visited BIPSS on 31 March. The discussion between the EU team and BIPSS was centred on the subject of Countering Violent Extremism (CVE). The EU visitors received a briefing on various activities of the institute followed by a presentation on 'Countering Violent Extremism: A Critical Assessment'. The EU team also apprised BIPSS about the various activities of the EU on CVE and the potential for cooperation.

 

 Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Visits BIPSS

A team from the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs visited BIPSS on 28 April 2014. The delegation is currently visiting Bangladesh as part of a multi country study to understand the role, functions and future direction of the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA). The visit comes on the eve of Indonesia's assumption of the presidency of the IORA.

During the visit the visiting delegation was briefed on the various activities of the institute and BIPSS' work on Security and Strategic Stability of the Indian Ocean.

 

 Asia Pacific Center for Security Studies (APCSS) visits BIPSS

A team from the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs visited BIPSS on 28 April 2014.  Roundtable on Strengthening responses to Climate Variability

Bangladesh Institute of Peace and Security Studies (BIPSS) and International Alert, (UK ) jointly arranged a roundtable titled “Strengthening Responses to Climate Variability” on May 04, 2014 from 10.30 am to 11:30 am at BIPSS Conference Room. The objective was to advance the critical discussion on the inter-linkages between climate change, peace and human security in Bangladesh. It brought together experts from the security, climate change, development and humanitarian relief sectors to promote appropriate policy and institutional responses.

 

Panel Discussion on 'Indian Elections 2014: Implications for Bangladesh'

The Bangladesh Institute of Peace and Security Studies (BIPSS) organized a panel discussion on ‘Indian Elections 2014: Implications for Bangladesh’ on May 5, 2014 at Hotel Lake Castle, Dhaka. The expert panel comprised of Brigadier General Shahedul Anam Khan (Rtd.), Editor, Op-ed and Strategic Affairs, The Daily Star; Professor M Shahiduzzaman, Professor, Department of International Relations, University of Dhaka and Professor Piash Karim, Professor, Department of Economics and Social Science, BRAC University. The discussion was moderated by Major General (Rtd.) Muniruzzaman, President, BIPSS. The panelists spoke about India’s policy towards Bangladesh, alleged Bangladeshi immigration to India, agendas of the prime ministerial candidates, possible ramifications for Bangladesh after the elections in India among other issues. The discussion was followed by a question and answer session between the attendees and the panel experts. The entire event was live tweeted.

 

 A Delegation of French Ministry of Defense visits BIPSS

A delegation from the French Ministry of Defence led by Lieutenant Colonel Alain Ulm visited BIPSS on 07 May 2014. The visiting French delegation interacted with President, BIPSS and other staff members of the institute. The discussion was focused on regional security, current issues facing Bangladesh and other matters of mutual interest.

 

Political Transformation on Myanmar – Implications for the Neighbourhood

An expert roundtable on ‘Political Transformation on Myanmar – Implications for the Neighbourhood’ was held on 08 May 2014 at BIPSS. Dr. Nicholas Farrelly, Research Fellow at the School of International Political and Strategic Studies at the Australian National University (ANU) presented the keynote paper. Dr. Farrelly is an internationally renowned scholar on Myanmar and was visiting Bangladesh as part of his field research in the region.

 

 The Embassy of Switzerland in Dhaka visits BIPSS

H.E. Caroline Trautweiler, Deputy Head of Mission along with the Research and Communication Officer from the Embassy of Switzerland in Dhaka visited Bangladesh Institute of Peace and Security Studies (BIPSS) on 12th May’ 2014. The delegation interacted with President, BIPSS and other researchers of the institute. The discussion focused on current political and security issues of Bangladesh as well as regional strategic and cooperation issues.

 

Political Transition in India - What It Means for South Asia and Beyond

Dr. C. Raja Mohan, Distinguished Fellow and Head of Strategic Studies at the Observer Research Foundation (ORF) in New Delhi delivered BIPSS 'Eminent Person Lecture' on June 11, 2014 in Dhaka. The lecture was titled ‘Political Transition in India: What It Means for South Asia and Beyond’. During his lecture, he analysed the implications of the recent political transition in India for the South Asian region. Dr. Raja Mohan highlighted that there will be new dynamics in India’s relationship with its neighbors. Dr. Raja Mohan also discussed how the contours of India’s relationship with countries beyond the South Asian region will also take shape in the coming days.

The event was presided over by the Major General A N M Muniruzzaman, ndc, psc, (Retd), President, BIPSS. The event was attended by a large audience comprising of academics, former diplomats of Bangladesh, foreign diplomats, members of civil society, media persons and a large number of youth.

 

BIPSS Joins CASS Forum

BIPSS has joined as a pioneering member of an International Forum called the CASS Forum. The Forum was launched recently in Beijing under the initiative of (Chinese Academy of Social Science) CASS. The forum aims to discuss and deliberate on the emerging issues of security, peace and development of the Asia Pacific region.
President, BIPSS was invited to speak at the inaugural session of the Forum and deliver a talk on “Security Cooperation in Asia Pacific Region.”

 

 Roundtable on Chanakya by Dr. Bappaditya Chakrvarty

On 15 June, Dr. Bappaditya Chakrvarty, a prominent author and scholar on Indian strategic thought delivered a lecture on 'Contemporary Relevance of Chanakya - Actionable Strategies and Operational Tactics’. During the talk, Dr. Chakravarty spoke about the various strategic concepts espoused by Chankya and their application in the contemporary era. Dr. Chakravarty claimed the relevance of Chanakya in contemporary time showing its applicability through different examples. The roundtable was chaired by President BIPSS, Major General Muniruzzaman (Retd). The programme was attended by the academics, and foreign diplomat.
