US Congressional Hearing: Bangladesh in Turmoil: A Nation on the Brink
President BIPSS, Major General Muniruzzaman (Retd). testified at the Congressional hearing on Bangladesh yesterday. The hearing held under the auspices of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the US House of Representatives was entitled 'Bangladesh in Turmoil: A Nation on the Brink'. It covered various politico-security aspects of the current situation in the country.
The hearing was attended by the Ambassador of Bangladesh to the United States, other officials from the Bangladesh embassy in Washington, officials from the State Department and various US government agencies, members of the press and the Bangladeshi diaspora in the United States.
General Muniruzzaman was the only witness from Bangladesh who was invited to testify at this hearing.
President BIPSS speaks at 'Curry Club' in Washington
President BIPSS, Major General Muniruzzaman (Retd.) spoke to South Asian policy experts and analysts in Washington DC on 19 November, 2013. The group informally nick named the ‘Curry Club’ meets once every month to deliberate /discuss on South Asian issues. The audience included analysts and officials from the Department of State, Department of Defense, US Army, Georgetown University and prominent Washington think tanks among others.
General Muniruzzaman’s talk focused mainly on South Asian Strategic and Security issues and the current situation in Bangladesh.
President BIPSS speaks on South Asian Water Security and Governance
President, BIPSS Major General Muniruzzaman (Retd.) attended and spoke at a conference on 'South Asian Water Security and Governance', in Kathmandu from 26th to 30th November, 2013. The conference focused on the critical issues of water scarcity, sharing of trans-boundary River and wider management of the Himalayan basin.
The Conference was hosted by World Bank and Department for International Development (DFID).
President BIPSS speaks on Security Implications of Climate Change: Its Impact on National and Regional Stability
President BIPSS, Major General Muniruzzaman (Retd.) was the keynote speaker at the Humanitarian Interventions Conference in Geneva, Switzerland. The conference was jointly hosted by the United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP) and the Geneva Centre for Security Policy (GCSP) will commence on 3rd December. It will be attended by policy planners and practitioners in the field of humanitarian operations.
General Muniruzzaman's keynote address will be titled 'Security Implications of Climate Change: Its Impact on National and Regional Stability' It may be mentioned that General Muniruzzaman is currently the Chairman of the Global Military Advisory Council on Climate Change (GMACCC).
President BIPSS attended The Global Humanitarian Summit
President BIPSS, Major General Muniruzzaman (Retd). attend the Global Humanitarian Summit 2013, held at the United Nations (UN) Headquarters in New York City from 11th to 14th December, 2013. The Summit will bring together key policy planners, experts and practitioners to deliberate on the emerging issues in the field of humanitarian operations and intervention.
The summit was organized under the auspices of the United Nations Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN-OCHA).
Chief of Party of PRODIP, The Asia Foundation, visits BIPSS
Mr. Russell Pepe, Chief of Party of project called PRODIP-Promoting Democratic Institution and Practices , from The Asia Foundation visited BIPSS today (17 December 2013). During the visit, he was briefed on the different activities of the institute. The briefing was followed by a wide ranging discussion on strategic and security issues concerning Bangladesh.
Swedish Foreign Ministry Delegation visits BIPSS
A Swedish Foreign Ministry delegation paid a visit to BIPSS and met with President BIPSS, along with rest of the BIPSS team. Among other members of the delegation included Mr. Anders Sjöberg, Head of the South Asia Team at the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs, the Swedish Ambassador in Bangladesh H E Anneli Lindahl Kenny. The delegation had a detailed discussion on Strategic and Security issues related to South Asian region and Bangladesh in particular.
The Fifth South Asia Regional Dialogue
President BIPSS, Major General Muniruzzaman (Retd). attended the Fifth South Asia Regional Dialogue in Kathmandu, Nepal from 4-6 November '13. The Dialogue is held under the auspices of the Consortium of South Asian Think Tanks (COSATT).
The theme of the fifth dialogue was 'South Asia 2025: Common Future, Shared Responsibilities'. General Muniruzzaman presented a paper on 'Human Security in South Asia' at the conference.
It may be mentioned that BIPSS is a founding member of COSATT.
The Third Yunan- Bangladesh Cooperation Dialogue
The 3rd Yunnan-Bangladesh Cooperation Dialogue will be held in Kunming, China on 31st December, 2013. It is an annual track 1.5 dialogue held between Bangladesh Institute of Peace and Security Studies (BIPSS) and Yunnan Development and Research Centre (YDRC) of Yunnan provincial government of China. The dialogue is held alternatively in Dhaka and Kunming.
“Pragmatic Cooperation on BCIM Growth Corridor” as the broad theme, the forthcoming dialogue will look into Industrial Cooperation, Land Connectivity, Maritime Cooperation and People to People Connectivity.
A four member delegation led by President, BIPSS Major General Muniruzzaman (Retd.) will be traveling to Kunming in the last week of December to present at the Dialogue. Proceedings from the dialogue will be published later.
