President BIPSS attended an international conference on 'Strategic Stability in the Indian Ocean'

President BIPSS, Major General Muniruzzaman (Retd), attended an international conference on 'Strategic Stability in the Indian Ocean'. The conference was jointly organised by the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) and the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS) at the Nanyang Technological University, Singapore and was held at the IORA headquarters in Port Louis, Mauritious.

General Muniruzzaman's paper at the conference was titled 'Building Security Cooperation in the IOR'

 

BUILDING SOCIAL HARMONY: INTERFAITH YOUTH DIALOGUE

Bangladesh Institute of Peace and Security Studies (BIPSS) arranged a youth dialogue titled   “Building Social Harmony: Interfaith Youth Dialogue” on 10th March, 2014. The aim of this dialogue was to find out the general position of each faith, in the present time, in relation to other faith based communities, state and society and inter-communal relations in Bangladesh. The state of religious minorities, the probable remedies of their worries and ways to enhance social harmony in Bangladesh were also discussed. A press release about the dialogue would be made and a summary of the dialogue would be published in BIPSS website and also be disseminated to concerned stake holders.


The day long dialogue was held at hotel Lake Castle, Gulshan, Dhaka. H.E Heather Cruden, the Canadian High Commissioner in Bangladesh had attended the dialogue as Chief Guest. President, BIPSS Major General Muniruzzaman (Retd), some BIPSS researchers and four theologians/clerics from four major religions were also present in the dialogue in addition to the youth participants from various faiths in Bangladesh

 

President BIPSS, Major General Muniruzzaman (Retd) delivered a lecture on 'SAARC Region - Security and Threat Landscape' at an international training course on ‘Transnational Crime - SAARC Perspective’ on 19 March 2014



A delegation from the institute led by President BIPSS, Major General Muniruzzaman (Retd). attended the Strategic Studies Summit organised by the Near East and South Asia Center for Strategic Studies at the US National Defense University from 24-25 February. The summit held annually in Bangkok examines the key strategic and security issues of the day. As part of the Strategic Studies Netowork (SSN), it brings together think tanks and universities from across the Middle East and South Asia

General Muniruzzaman currently serves as a member of the SSN Board of Directors.

Discussion on Bangladesh’s Electoral Violence and its Implications

The Chief of Party of the International Federation for Electoral Systems (IFES) in Philippines. Ms. Beverly Hagerdon Thakur visited BIPSS on 27 January, 2014. During the visit, she was accompanied by Mr. Alistair Legge, Chief of Party of IFES in Bangladesh.


President BIPSS Attended Simulation Game on South Asian Security

President BIPSS, Major General Muniruzzaman (Retd.) visited Washington D.C. from 12 January to 22 January, 2014 to participate in a simulation game to be conducted by the Center for Naval Analyses (CNA). The game was based on South Asian security particularly from the non-traditional security angle. The Gaming Team and experts tested and played the game on multiple security scenarios.


President BIPSS attended a regional conference on 'Cooperative Development, Peace and Security in South Asia' in Kathmandu, Nepal from 15-16 February, 2014

President BIPSS, Major General Muniruzzaman (Retd). attended at a regional conference on 'Cooperative Development, Peace and Security in South Asia' held in Kathmandu, Nepal from 15-16 February '14. The conference was organised by the Centre for Research in Rural and Industrial Development (CRRID), India and the Centre for South Asian Studies, Nepal. The attendees included representatives from think tanks and the strategic community of South Asian countries, academics, officials and representatives from the SAARC Secretariat as well as members of the media.

General Muniruzzaman presented a paper on 'Non-Traditional Security Issues in South Asia' at the conference. The conference was innaugurated by H.E. Sushil Kumar Koirala, Hon. Prime Minister of Nepal.

 

President BIPSS attended the 3rd Yunnan-Bangladesh Cooperation Dialogue in Kunming, China

 


The 3rd Yunnan-Bangladesh Cooperation Dialogue has been held in Kunming, China on 31st December, 2013. It was an annual track 1.5 dialogue held between Bangladesh Institute of Peace and Security Studies (BIPSS) and Yunnan Development and Research Centre (YDRC) of Yunnan provincial government of China. The dialogue was held alternatively in Dhaka and Kunming.


“Pragmatic Cooperation on BCIM Growth Corridor” as the broad theme, the forthcoming dialogue looked into Industrial Cooperation, Land Connectivity, Maritime Cooperation and People to People Connectivity.


A four member delegation led by President, BIPSS Major General Muniruzzaman (Retd.) was traveling to Kunming in the last week of December to present at the Dialogue.


 

Russell Pepe visits BIPSS

 

 

Mr. Russell Pepe, Chief of Party of project called PRODIP-Promoting Democratic Institution and Practices, from The Asia Foundation visited BIPSS on 17 December, 2013. During the visit, he was briefed on the different activities of the institute. The briefing was followed by a wide ranging discussion on strategic and security issues concerning Bangladesh.


 

President BIPSS attended the Global humanitarian Summit

 

 

President BIPSS, Major General Muniruzzaman (Retd) attended the Global Humanitarian Summit 2013, held at the United Nations (UN) Headquarters in New York City from 11th to 14th December, 2013. The Summit brought together key policy planners, experts and practitioners to deliberate on the emerging issues in the field of humanitarian operations and intervention.

The summit was organized under the auspices of the United Nations Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN-OCHA).


 

President BIPSS visits Geneva for Humanitarian Interventions Conference

 

 

President BIPSS, Major General Muniruzzaman (Retd) was the keynote speaker at the Humanitarian Interventions Conference in Geneva, Switzerland. The conference was jointly hosted by the United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP) and the Geneva Centre for Security Policy (GCSP) was commenced on 03 December, 2013. It was attended by policy planners and practitioners in the field of humanitarian operations.

General Muniruzzaman's keynote address was titled 'Security Implications of Climate Change: Its Impact on National and Regional Stability'. It could be mentioned that General Muniruzzaman is currently the Chairman of the Global Military Advisory Council on Climate Change (GMACCC).
