A delegation from the Asia Pacific Center for Strategic Studies (APCSS) led by Mr. Carleton R. Cramer, Dean of Academics, APCSS paid a visit to the BIPSS on 21st April. They were briefed on the activities of BIPSS and a presentation was also given to the delegation on “Bangladesh as a Maritime Nation”. They had a discussion on the areas of potential cooperation between APCSS and BIPSS. It may be mentioned that President, BIPSS, Major General Muniruzzaman is an alumni of APCSS and was awarded the ‘APCSS Alumni Achievement Award’ in 2014.

BIPSS Roundtable Discussion on “One Belt, One Road: Challenges and Opportunities” was held on 20th April at the BIPSS conference room. Mr. Liu Kaiyang, Deputy Secretary General, Chinese Association for International Understanding (CAFIU), was the keynote speaker. The discussion was moderated by Major General Muniruzzaman (Retd.), President, BIPSS. The event was attended by some well-known diplomats and experts of global affairs in the country. The keynote speech by Mr. Kaiyang was followed by a lively question/answer session where the guests pointed out key issues regarding the OBOR initiative. The entire event was live tweeted with the twitter handle #OBOR.

The Ambassador of The Federal Republic of Germany His Excellency Dr. Thomas Prinz called on President BIPSS, Major General A N M Muniruzzaman, ndc, psc (Retd.) at his office. They discussed matters of mutual interest. The ambassador and other visitors from the German embassy were briefed on the institute and its research agenda.

The keynote was presented by Dr. Julian Droogan, Director, Terrorism Research Program, Macquarie University, Australia and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Policing, Intelligence and Counter Terrorism. The discussion was moderated by BIPSS President Major Gen. ANM Muniruzzaman (retd.). It was attended by several distinguished diplomats, journalists and security specialists in the country. Mr. Sherman Young, Pro-Vice Chancellor of Macquarie University, Australia, called on President, BIPSS, Major General ANM Munirizzaman (Retd.) in his office on 10th April. They discussed on the matters of mutual interests. The Pro-VC of Macquarie University also explored the potential areas of cooperation and collaboration with BIPSS.

President BIPSS Major General Muniruzzaman attended and spoke at the Strategic Studies Summit held in Ankara,Turkey last week. The yearly summit brings together leading think tanks, strategic thinkers,security experts,policy makers from a large number of countries. This years summit was of special significance as it was held in the back drop of some grave security challenges facing the international system. General Muniruzzaman spoke at an expert panel on the linkages of the Syrian civil war to the spread of ISIS. The summit was also attended by Shafqat Munir, Associate Research Fellow, BIPSS.
It may be mentioned that Strategic Studies Summit is arranged by the Strategic Studies Network (SSN) of the US National Defence University. BIPSS is a member of the SSN. The network undertakes studies on critical strategic and security issues, it's findings/recommendations are widely circulated to policy makers.

BIPSS will be organising a round table discussion titled “Youth Radicalisation : Understanding the Threat Landscape” on 10th April 2016. The keynote paper will be presented by Dr. Julian Droogan, Director of the Terrorism Research Program, Macquarie University, Australia and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Policing, Intelligence and Counter Terrorism .
Dr. Droogan spent years conducting fieldwork in the Middle East, Central Asia, and South Asia. His research interests include countering violent extremism, religious radicalisation, extremist narratives, and the history of terrorism and political violence. The round table will be moderated by Major General ANM Muniruzzaman (Retd), President, BIPSS.
