The twenty-first century brings with it an increasingly complex and even more urgent security challenges and the transnational security threat is the new facet of such security challenges. Bangladesh, located in close proximity to China and India- two would be superpowers-, poised to become either a thriving democracy or a failed state, has been facing burgeoning challenges from transnational security elements including terrorism, arms and drug smuggling, environmental challenges and so on. But, because of its economic and political vulnerability, Bangladesh cannot face-off such challenges alone. Besides, due to its geo-strategic location, there is a danger that such threats can destabilize the region as a whole. Keeping this in mind, a concerted effort needs to be taken across the region so that a common platform can be created to address the transnational security issues. |

Climate change is increasingly recognized as a major human security issue that poses serious global threats. Events like weather-related disasters, desertification and rising sea level, exacerbated by climate change, affect individuals and communities around the world. Climate change reduces access to fresh and safe drinking water, negatively affects health and poses a real threat to food security in many countries of the world. It is a contributing factor to poverty, and forces people from their homes, sometimes permanently. However, climate change can heighten existing social and political tensions or can lead to new ones. Dramatic environmental change undeniably places the infrastructure of all countries to test. But it poses an ever greater threat to developing countries that lack the means, the know-how and the capacity to effectively deal with these phenomena. Impacts of global warming and climate change thus have the potential to challenge our development efforts, human security and the future. Read more

The international community has suffered, in recent days, from newly surfaced infectious diseases. The present international system is more globally interdependent than any other time in history. The process of globalization has increased the pace of global travel, migration, and trade significantly in recent decades which have heightened the risk of a global infectious disease outbreak. The recent pandemic which started in Mexico hit almost all the countries of Europe. The spread of infectious disease can have significant effects on national and international security, in destabilizing nations and regions. This may end up resulting in shocking economic and social loss. This Issue Brief explains the links between infectious diseases and national security and then analyses how such diseases pose threats to transnational security and why holistic and non-linear approach are essential to fight such threats. In response, institutional change needs to happen swifty and in the form of basic energy management, better transmission unfrastructure, and greater efficiency and something as rudimentary as the drafting of countrywide energy strategies must be developed as a basic minimum.
